One Percent
One Percent In the 32 years since Danny Lyon's classic "The Bikeriders" first documented the American "outlaw" biker, images of black leather, chrome steel, tattoos and throbbing Harley Davidsons have permeated popular culture. In "One Percent" Michael Upright invites us to look past those images and meet the people whose lives are the reality behind the icons. Upright spent four years establishing a relationship with the bikers documented in these photographs. The result is an authentic and visually rich portrait of a facet of American society rarely met face-to-face. "One Percent" is printed with 240 line black and gray duotones on premium paper to fully capture the lush dynamics of the original photographic prints. Reviews In a deft and close inspection
of an entrenched American subculture-the motorcycle gang-Michael Upright has produced
One Percent. Upright spent four years photographing and talking to members of
the Outlaws motorcycle gang, and in this collection he gets behind the leather,
the chrome, the woolly beards, and ever-present sunglasses to make known other
sides of this modern-day nomadic tribe. Michael Upright's One
Percent is further reminder of the reason for his prominence in South Florida's
photography community. His sensitive and revealing portraits of the Outlaws go
a long way toward humanizing their sometime harsh reality. . the genuine bikers . . the camaraderie and
colors, the celebrations, the races and the rides, the women and even the babies.
It's an effective book-dark, though shot mostly in stark daylight, and serious,
though many moments are light. |
