Scott E. Sutton

Southern California native Scott E. Sutton began painting in grade school. "I painted so much in first grade that I didn't do my school work. The teachers were not amused and made me repeat." The happy realization that he could use his art to illustrate and enhance his school work eventually endeared him to his teachers and inspired a life-long fascination with art, storytelling and children's education.

By the time he graduated from high school, Scott was selling his illustrations, cartoons and comic strips to local magazines. After a five-year apprenticeship with Tom Morgan, former director of the Academy of Visual Design in New Zealand, Scott's fine art was discovered by the Sherwood Galleries. He went on to sell 400 original paintings through Sherwood and other galleries while his children's fantasy paintings became a popular series of prints. It was collectors asking, "What's the story behind these paintings?" that inspired his first book.

Scott still exhibits art shows and galleries while appearing frequently at schools, libraries and bookstores where he speaks with 10,000 children each year about the joys using art and imagination to learn. "We have fun and I get to do what I do best: be a professional kid." He often shows the children his works-in-progress. "I love the interaction. Children don't hesitate to tell you what they like or dislike," says Scott. He also credits the contributions of hundreds of parents, teachers and librarians whose reviews and comments-particularly of The Kuekumber Kids series-have helped to refine the educational content of his books.

In addition to fine art prints and custom plush toys based on his characters, Scott Sutton has sold 100,000 books. His work has been honored with the International Reading Association Award for Exemplary Service in the Promotion of Literacy and the President's Recommended Selection from the Society of Writers at the United Nations.

Along with his wife, gallery-owner and artist, Susie Sutton, and his Chow Chow, Obi, the star of his Dinosaur Dog series, Scott lives, writes, paints and surfs in southern California. He is currently at work on three new Family of Ree stories, an art activity book entitled How to Draw Stuff and a whole bunch of other projects if he could just find the time to finish them and surf.
